Why I chose to move to Peterborough Retirement

Stephanie Beem’s journey to Peterborough Retirement began during a time of significant change following a hospital stay. With her sister’s support, she explored five different retirement communities before choosing Peterborough Retirement. She was drawn to its welcoming atmosphere, spacious layout, and primarily one-level design, which made walking safely and comfortably much easier. Returning home with stairs was no longer possible, so this new chapter offered both security and peace of mind.

A smooth and welcoming transition

Stephanie’s transition was not easy at first. She deeply missed cooking and the familiar routines of home. Over time, however, she began to appreciate the comfort of having meals thoughtfully prepared and the support that allowed her to focus on healing and daily well-being.

Activities I enjoy and staying connected

Some of Stephanie’s greatest joys come from simple, meaningful moments—shopping outings with her sister and time spent with her grandchildren, who bring happiness and light into her days.

The meaningful work and connections that shaped my life

Born in Montreal, Stephanie studied ballet as a child and later became a ballet teacher. One of her most memorable achievements was performing as one of the four swans in a production of Swan Lake with the Montreal Ballet Company. Her professional path later led her into banking, taking her to live in the United States for many years.

In retirement, she returned to the Buckhorn area, where she had long owned a cottage, and became deeply involved in local events and activities—earning recognition as Volunteer of the Year in 2023.

Who inspires me now

At this stage in her life, Stephanie finds inspiration in the people around her each day. Their presence, kindness, and shared experiences bring encouragement and comfort.

Rediscovering friendship and connection

While Stephanie continues to miss longtime friends and family members who have passed in recent years, she has gradually found comfort in forming new friendships within the community. Opportunities to connect with others are always present, helping her rediscover companionship and belonging.

How life has changed for the better

Living at Peterborough Retirement has provided Stephanie with safety, support, and renewed connection. Her story reflects resilience, artistry, and community—showing that even in life’s transitions, new friendships, purpose, and moments of joy can still unfold.
